February 2010: Phoenix Healthcare’s much-anticipated new showroom in Martyn Street (corner Grove Street) is due to open to the public this month.
The new location will, for the first time in regional Queensland, provide shoppers and prescribers with a comprehensive hands-on display of adaptive aids and appliances for those facing physical challenges in their daily lives.
The Phoenix Healthcare Group has been evolving throughout North Queensland since the mid-1990s, eventually launching its flagship store and pharmacy on the corner of Lake and Upward Streets around the year 2000. The highly regarded company operates across the north, spanning Thursday Island down to Bowen, and west to the Territory border. The new Martyn Street showroom is the forth addition to the group, following Condor Healthcare in Townsville and the extensive maintenance division at 36 Water Street in Cairns.
Already a popular local business thanks to the impressive range of quality products and aids, mobility options and home nursing supplies available for sale, hire and repair, the new premises is set to be even more informative and convenient. On display is everything Phoenix Healthcare is renowned for stocking – beds, lift chairs, crutches, walking sticks and wheeled walkers, scooters, power chairs, toileting or bathroom aids, specialty pillows, cushions and all that’s in between.
Proprietor John Blinco says, “The Martyn Street showroom offers customers the opportunity to make an educated decision on the product that will make someone most comfortable, at all different cost levels. You’ll be able to see and try four or five different beds, or lift chairs, and see how hoists work, for example.”
Additionally the owners (who already do their best to encourage ‘green’ operations as far as recycling, power conservation and water preservation within the current store locations) have placed an emphasis on ensuring the new location stays as environmentally friendly as possible. “The 135 Martyn Street business makes the best use of natural lighting, while all installed artificial lighting is low energy. The space is designed to utilise to a maximum the natural air flow, assisted by fans, hence using minimal air-conditioning. Artificial substances have not been used on the floor, and the use of materials in display areas has been minimised to save on the energy required to create such items in the first place. No rainforest trees lost their lives thanks to this being a timberless construction, and an inline low energy water heater was also installed,” adds Mr Blinco.
Many locals are excited to have chipped in on the building of the much-anticipated new health and wellbeing precinct on the corner of Martyn and Grove streets, and one local artist in particular has again added his special touch. Gary Grant, famous around town for his wonderful art on fibreglass, metals and plastics, and well-known for his Egyptian art installations at the original Lake Street Phoenix Healthcare site and adorning of the company’s delivery vans, has once again left his unique mark on the new walls of 135 Martyn Street. Gary’s contributed several amazing Egyptian-themed murals to this Phoenix Healthcare showroom, enabling the team to promote its ongoing colourful and positive philosophy – a far cry from the often clinical portrayal of similar national organisations.
An official orientation and industry education day is scheduled for Wednesday 17 February, with the showroom on 135 Martyn Street open to the public from Monday 22 February.
